Bullerengue – Resistance, Drums and Community
Bullerengue is an Afro-Colombian music and dance tradition from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Rooted in communities of resistance and collective memory, it is practiced today by the descendants of the Cimarrones—runaway enslaved people of African and Indigenous heritage who once inhabited the region. Traditionally passed down orally and collectively, Bullerengue is closely connected to social rituals and a knowledge system carried largely by women.
At its heart are collective songs based on the call-and-response principle, powerful drum rhythms, and an improvised, earth-centered dance performed in a circle. Within this shared space, rhythm, voice and movement create a strong sense of community. The songs tell stories of everyday life—love and labour, grief and memory, land and belonging.
In this event, Bullerengue becomes a living gathering: an invitation to experience rhythm, voice and dance as forms of connection, cultural memory and collective strength.
Alex May, from Cartagena (Colombia), will share his experience and knowledge of Bullerengue. For more than ten years he has led Memorias Danza Teatro, an artistic project that brings together young Afro-Colombian people from Cartagena and the Caribbean region through dance and movement, promoting empowerment through the performing arts.
The event is free of charge, with a suggested donation.
Due to limited capacity, registration is required via email: canoafolk@gmail.com
Donations will be collected in cash at the door on the day of the event and will contribute to covering the costs of bringing Alex May to Berlin and supporting his work
